The celebration of Pentecost
The Pentecost celebration is observed differently depending on the region of the country. In Moldova and Transylvania, Christians celebrate Pentecost for three days. In Muntenia and Oltenia, Pentecost lasts for seven days, while in Banat it is celebrated for eight days.
Such a large and complex celebration as Pentecost brings with it a multitude of customs, mostly found in smaller villages and towns.
The Călușari dance is a tradition especially encountered in Oltenia. It is considered a healing dance that brings health and luck. Grouped in teams of 7–8, the Călușari begin their dance on the second day of Pentecost, going from house to house to sing and chase away evil spirits.
Another tradition specific to Pentecost in the Transylvania region is called “Impănatul boului” (“Decorating the Ox”). This custom consists of a procession through the village streets, with the main character being an ox decorated with all kinds of flower ornaments.
Also in Transylvania, immediately after Pentecost, the tradition known as “udatul nevestelor” (“watering the wives”) takes place. According to the tradition, women must be sprinkled with water to remain healthy and beautiful throughout the rest of the year.
In addition to the many traditions and customs, Pentecost is also associated with a series of superstitions. Some of the better-known ones are:
On Pentecost days, it is not advisable to go to the fields, as the Iele (fairy-like spirits) may catch and punish you;
During Pentecost, one should not enter vineyards, deserted places, forests, or wells, as you might encounter evil spirits;
Anyone who works on Pentecost will be punished by the power of the Iele, because they do not properly honor the day;
For nine weeks after Pentecost, healing herbs should not be picked;
On Pentecost day, it is not good to quarrel with others, as you may be “taken by Pentecost”.
