Barsana Monastery is located in the Barsana village, in Maramures County. The monastery belongs to the Diocese of Maramures and Satmar and it is located 22 km south-east from the city of Sighetul Marmatiei, at the exit of Barsana village, near the bank of Iza. Barsana is one of the oldest village and is certified from 1326.
At Barsana were two monastic hearths: one in the south-eastern edge, at a place called The Valley of Slatina and another in the south-western edge, on the Humana hill, at the fountains of the valley, which today is called Valea Hotarului and in the documents of the sixteenth century is mentioned with the name The Valley of the Monastery.
What transforms this monastery into an amazing place is the stylistic unity and the artistic sense that govern the entire facility.
The monastery "Synaxis of the 12 Apostles" – Barsana was designed as an architectural ensemble and includes the following tourist attractions: the church in Maramures style, the house of nuns, the house of the artist, the Maramures gate, the funerary monument, the museum, the tower-bell, acces road, place for lighting candles, roadside crucifixes, lake, bridge over the lake, pathways that lead to different objectives, and parking.
